(1/7) University of Maine Farmington Suspension Hearing Testimony

Back

January 22, 1988 UMF Conduct Committee Hearing to suspend Pierce Parker for harassment and failure to obey an officer of the law for refusing to give up seats and the table for three white female students in the UMF dinning room. UMF is the site where the story described in Pierce Parker's book, "The Queen Bees of New England," [London, UK: Athena Press] takes place in the late 1980's. The State of Maine did not have a state agency that enforced civil rights laws on college campuses until the mid-1990's. Thus, the UMF officials freely fabricated disciplinary reports to suspend first, and then to expel him, based on lies fed from the three white female students. He was accused of "harassing" the white students because he refused to yield seats for them at the UMF cafeteria. Later, he filed a racial discrimination complaint against UMF with the Boston office of the US Department's Office of Civil Rights (DOE/OCR), but due to the lack of jurisdiction, it was eventually quashed. Then, the case was passed onto the US Department's Health and Human Services' Office of Civil Rights (HHS/OCR), but after three years of delay, in order to dispose the case quickly, HHS/OCR interviewed not a single witness in its investigation and based all its findings solely on the forged documents supplied by UMF. A prolonged and perfunctory investigation upheld the fabricated UMF disciplinary reports in its letter of findings. The January 1988 UMF Conduct Committee Hearing to suspend Pierce Parker with the fabricated UMF disciplinary reports can be seen on YouTube in seven parts.
