The 2007 Earthdance festival went off again this year in Sydney Park with thousands of people turning up to mark the start of the regions active outdoor festival season. The Urban breaks space was a collaboration of Earthdance, Mekanarky and Figure 8 and featured an airplane cockpit d.j booth and 6k solar sound system .A good day of community dancing was had but unfortunately the Police at the event were heavy handed and the use of sniffer dog's searches lead to an increase of overdoses at the festival as people took more than they could handles they binged before passing the sniffer dog entrance to the site. This type of policing is irresponsible and potentially life threatening and has been labeled so by an ombudsman report on the subject in recent years. The film finish's with footage of an incident that occurred with the police as the crew was packing up at the end of the festival. The Police were searching a bag that was apparently found, the cops trying to establish some identification to find the owner. One of our packs up crew attempted to film the search under the assumption it was another drug search operation and the police acted aggressively in grabbing the phone damaging it and the guys hand. Some of Police and security on the day had acted aggressively toward the festival punters leading to a general animosity towards the event. This lead to a lot of theft occurring at the festival. Items were taken out of production trucks, bars and the festival infrastructure itself like fencing and barriers disappeared. It's important that we lobby the authorities to be more sensible to policing next year's event. Free parties have been happening for many years in the park since the early Vibe Tribe events. Earthdance 07 seemed to be overshadowed by the heavy policing of the APEC summit that had occurred the previous weekend in Sydney. Let's hope next year a better outcome will prevail with a more common sense approach to policing the event.
