Cormorant Fishing on the Kiso River (I-23E)

Back

Cormorant fishing was first mentioned in the chronicles of Japan in the year 702. The ancient fishing method of fishing masters manipulating the cormorants to catch freshwater fish, goes back to the Edo-period (1603-1867) when it was developed under the protection of the Feudal lords belonging to the Naruse clan. But because this fishing method is not very efficient it was used solely for tourism stating in the Showa-period (1926-1989). At present there are 12 locations in Japan where cormorant fishing takes place. They are Aichi, Gifu, Kyoto, Shikoku and Kyushu. Even though Cormorant fishing is often thought to be a summer amusement, it is actually held for nearly half a year. In Inuyama it takes place from May 11 until October 15.
