I wasn't really aware of how much people volunteered back then; if it's declined then, yea, that's a sad thing. You know what's also kind of a shame now? That these types of songs aren't written by mainstream artists . . . it seems to me that today's Top 40 artist wouldn't touch on anything controversial of political

you make good points - i do remember those problems. but volunteerism was incredible in that era. there were numerous outpourings of financial and emotional support for people in this country as well as in other places. that was the only time people were actually DOING something, and following through, and taking it to the Congress. nowadays, everyone just complains.

Actually, for a lot of people, the 80s were a pretty awful decade once Reagan made his tax cuts for the wealthy. A lot of social/educational programs were immediately dismantled. State health facilities were closed, with patients getting kicked out and becoming homeless.
I agree that after the 70s malaise/Carter era, America needed a optimistic leader and got its confidence restored by putting Reagan in the White House. But for a lot of people it came at a very steep price.

Great vid.
It's better today than it was back then. Maybe that's just because I'm older and my fake teenage cynicism has been replaced by real grown-up cynicism.

the 80s were not "awful". not at all. there is ALWAYS the dissenting voice. unfortunately, those voices attempt to rewrite history. like ANY decade, the 80s were fraught with concerns and fears. Reagan was a tremendous leader. Thatcher as well. those leaders stuck up for the western democracies where the french, germans, italians, and japs sat back and just enjoyed the economic prosperity brought about with both the reagan and thatcher administrations.

this wasnt very popular in its day-- but lets see ANYONE write a song today about how "beautiful" the world is. truth is- not much has changed in 30 years. peoples PERCEPTIONS and values have, though. not that 1980 (or that era in general) was Xanadu, but people werent as miserable, cynical, and pessimistic as today. they were more apt to help other people, too, and didnt shut themselves in their homes with an X-box and 5,000 channels of TV. just my thoughts...thanks for uploading this cool vid.
