and it doesn't improve either when sung loud. It can't be sung by "big great" voices. Just the whispering delicate silent little voices. Doesn't make it easier though!

I agree with that with almost all of Joao's performances/music... The crazy thing with this song though is how flawlessly he goes from one key to another as if it were a fluid motion. When you break this song down chord by chord it's all over the place but he amazingly puts it all together so effortlessly. Genius....

Joao is the father of bossa nova guitar. A classic Jobim tune, a perfect rendition. Funny thing about bossa nova, it doesn't improve much by adding instruments. Guitar & voice is all you need. English only folks should check out Gene Lee's lyrics. They capture the spirit if not the letter of the song. Because Jobim used jazzy chords and unusual intervals, local critics said his music was 'out of tune'. This song is his answer to his critics.

You´ll never hear again in your entire lifetime a song in which the lyrics goes so magically well with the melody and the superb rithmic acoustic guitar. Pure genius. Oh, and I´m brazilian haha...
